Longer version

I was born on 2nd October 1978 in Newark, UK and stayed there until I was 18. I went to primary school in Newark and then when I was eleven I continued my education at All Saints RC Secondary School in Mansfield. I achieved a lot there and left having gained 10 GCSEs and 4 A Levels. In my final year at school I was also Head Boy. On a number of occasions I went to The Briars where I had a number of memorable Christian experiences forming part of the faith I have now.

University

On leaving Newark I studied engineering at Edinburgh University. I read Civil and Environmental Engineering, specialising in hydraulics in my final years. I graduated from university with an undergraduate masters degree gaining first class honours and my dissertation on culvert flow, received the hydraulics prize from the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Work

In 2001, I joined Halcrow Group as a graduate engineer.   I’ve worked on and led numerous hydrodynamic modelling projects in the areas of flood defence, flood mapping, flood forecasting and CFMPs for the Environment Agency.

I’m now a senior engineer at Halcrow and I continue to manage large challenging hydrodynamic modelling projects, where I use my technological skills to deliver them efficiently.

In addition to clients’ projects, I lead on research and development to improve project quality and streamline workflow practices.  I manage part of our corporate intranet to facilitate knowledge management for approximately 1000 staff and I have a key input into Halcrow's web strategy, where I develop innovative web solutions for private clients.

In 2007 I became a chartered engineer and a member of CIWEM.

Life

I’m currently single and living in Leeds, UK with one of my work colleagues, Dan.

I'm a passionate Christian and attend St George's Church in Leeds. I love to worship there. I help lead the Pathfinders group (children age 8-11) and I also help spread God's word by helping to lead an Alpha course. One of my favorite bible verses is 'I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full' (John 10:10) and I do try and live my life to the full.

I'm also really into all things related to computers, the internet and the technology that powers them both. I enjoy watching comedy, cooking and meeting up with friends. I'm also currently trying to learn to play the guitar, but I'm really rubbish at the moment. When I have time I like pottery, particularly throwing.

This site

I’ve owned the domain aboutrob.com since 2000. In its first few incarnations, it served as a portfolio for my student work, a sort of extended CV. It was information about Rob, hence it's name. In 2002, it served as a portal to help get me through my depression, it allowed me to write about how I felt. Now in 2008 it's reborn so that my family and friends can see what I'm upto.
